At GTC, Nvidia, EPRI, and a bunch of utilities have unveiled the Open Power AI Consortium, an ambitious initiative to replace old-school electricity management with cutting-edge AI models. Because if there's one thing the energy grid needs, it's more machine learning jargon and fewer humans who actually understand how transformers work.
According to the announcement, this noble quest involves training "domain-specific, multimodal large language models" on "massive libraries of proprietary energy and electrical engineering data." Translation: They're feeding a bunch of documents into GPUs so AI can spit out fancy reports for utility companies to ignore while still hiking rates.
And what’s running this operation? Hundreds of Nvidia H100 GPUs, naturally. Nothing screams "efficient energy management" like a data center devouring electricity at record speeds to help utility companies optimize… electricity.
The supposed benefits? AI-powered grid reliability, asset optimization, and environmental impact studies that might shave a few years off bureaucratic nightmares like interconnection studies. The goal is to cut the timeline for approving new energy projects by 5x, which is great, because at this rate, we’ll need another 5x improvement just to handle the energy demand from all these AI models Nvidia keeps pushing.
And if you thought this was just a tiny industry initiative, think again. The consortium’s executive advisory committee includes execs from Duke Energy, PG&E (yes, that PG&E), and Portland General Electric, plus tech giants like AWS, Oracle, and Microsoft—because nothing bad has ever happened when big tech and utilities get together to "innovate."
Don’t worry, this is all part of a grander vision for AI-powered energy. After all, if the world’s electricity supply is going to be consumed by data centers training AI models, why not let AI manage the power grid too? What could possibly go wrong?
